  Monday 13 December 2004
  Swami Agnivesh will receive the Right Livelihood award, the "alternative Nobel peace price", on 9 December 2004 in the Swedish parliament "for strong commitment and cooperation over many years to promote the values of co-existence, tolerance and understanding in India and between the countries of South Asia".
  Swami Agnivesh is the founder of Bandhua Mukti Morcha (BMM), which works to liberate bonded labourers in India and which since 1981 BMM has secured the release of over 172,000 Indian workers and helped create several trades unions. In 1987, he led a march from Delhi to Rajasthan to protest against suttee (the immolation of widows on their husbands’ funeral pyres), and he has campaigned against female infanticide and in support of the entry of "untouchables" into Hindu temples. After the massacre of many Muslims in Gujarat in 2002, he joined religious leaders in a march to the area affected by violence denouncing Hindu fundamentalism.

  Burma Economic Watch, Economics Dept, Macquarie University, Sydney will lead a discussion on:
  BURMA'S BANKS AND THEIR ROLE IN THE COUNTRY'S HUMANITARIAN CRISIS
  Based at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, Sean Turnell is an economist and former central banker with a long-time interest in Burma's financial system. He is currently completing
  a bookl on the political economy of money and banking in Burma.
  In 2003, Burma suffered a banking crisis that imposed substantial hardships upon its people. It was but the latest in a long line of financial catastrophes that have beset the country, each a milestone in Burma's slide into humanitarian disaster. What to do about relieving this disaster is contentious territory in which artificial boundaries are sometimes erected between 'economic' and 'humanitarian' concerns. Burma's underdeveloped and crisis-prone financial sector has consistently been a cause of its impoverishment. Set it right, and much good may follow.
  This is the first in a series of meetings, which may provide a Geneva-based forum for the exchange of views and experiences on a wide range of topics such as ethnicity and language in Myanmar, culture and religion, external relations, regional cooperation, development aid, etcŠ
  Invitees, participating in their individual capacity, include UN officers, diplomats, academics, members of NGOs, private sector representatives, and other interested individuals.
  The meeting will be held under the Chatham House Rule which states that: "When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed".

  Regards sur la suisse d'un correspondant de la presse chinoise par M. LIU Jun, Correspondant permanent et Chef du Bureau du Guangming Daily de Chine auprès de l'Office des Nations Unies à Genève
  M. Liu Jun nous est bien connu puisque c'est la seconde fois durant sa carrière qu'il séjourne et travaille à Genève. Suite à son premier séjour, il a publié en en Chine deux ouvrages consacrés à la Suisse (en chinois) :

• Le mardi 13 janvier 2004: Conférence publique avec Masayuki NINOMIYA, Professeur.
  Le prof. Ninomiya était depuis 1989 en charge de la section de japonais à l'Université de Genève. Il a quitté ses fonctions pour cause de retraite à la fin de l'année académique 2002-2003; il était également le secrétaire général exécutif de l'Association pour la construction de la Maison de la Culture du Japon à Paris. Le thème Regards croisés Orient/Occident est plus que jamais d'actualité.
